I’m deaf.
Deaf like a snake who can hear the thumps and sounds of the world, but not the
voices.

I’m scared.
Scared like a deer caught between car headlights, its life flashing before its eyes.

I’m gone.

But wait –
Maybe I’m not small.

There’s a man, a McMurphy, who called me big.
I’m big?
Big like a tree, strong as an ox, more powerful than the Combine.

But wait –
Maybe I’m not deaf.

That McMurphy puts his question into my palm and let’s me answer it.
I can hear?
My ears
